WANTED: String players for a Winter/Spring 2020 Rock Orchestra Class!

WE ARE LOOKING FOR acoustic & electric string players; violinists, violists, cellists, & double bassists of all ages & skill levels.

We will be performing rock, pop, and original music in an orchestral setting that uses a rock rhythm section (drums, guitars, and bass guitar). We use both electric & acoustic string instruments. We still have room for a drummer to join us.

WHEN: Rock For Strings WINTER Session 2020 begins on Wed. Jan. 8th, 8:00 to 9:00 PM at The Sound Post. We meet weekly on Wednesday nights. The Sound Post is located at 513 Jackson Street, there is a front Jackson Street entrance and a rear parking lot with a load in entrance. Note – there is NO CLASS on 1/15. Class resumes on 1/22.

Here is where this group is different than school or community orchestra; we teach the basics of live sound, amplification, playing on an electric instrument, using effects, and mics. We’ve played various house concerts, venues, flash mobs, churches, the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon, and we’ve been filmed for a TV show. We are open to string players of all ages and skill levels.

Our theme for Winter/Soring 2020 is Space Rock. That being said, “space rock” in and of itself is a WIDE descriptor, so here’s the territory that we could cover. If we relate to it as a genre, that means anything from 1960’s early prog (Pink Floyd) rolling into Queen (Flash Gordan and the like) and Muse (Knights of Cydonia and more from their catalog) to bands from the shoegaze genre. If we relate to the term on a literal level, that can also mean anything with a space related title. Think obvious choices, like Starman and Lady Stardust by David Bowie. Walking On The Moon by the Police. We can go squarely back to the 80’s with songs like The Final Countdown. And then there’s the much newer Black Hole Sun. Taking the term on a literal level…the gates of possibility for this season’s setlist swing wide open.

Winter session 2020 will focus on prepping for our annual performance at the Marine Corps Half Marathon in May 2020. This is the class schedule as of time of publication;

First class – 1/8/2020 at 8 PM (arrive 7:30 to 7:45 to setup)

Willstock house concert event – TBA

The Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon – 5/17/20

Last day – TBD based on Willstock 2020 scheduling.

Other shows may be added if scheduling permits and the opportunity is granted.

First class is 1/8/20 (January 2020 will be a three week month)

Pre pay each month – $15 per session

All NEW enrollment for the class closes Feb 6th. I’ve extended the deadline because there’s always someone who shows up weeks late saying “hey my friend just figured out their schedule…can they join?” So the deadline is now a week longer than it has been in the past.
